About the Village

Ocomán, one of the villages we’ve worked with the longest, is nestled across a riverbed right off the main road (Highway 5) running between the country’s capitol Tegucigalpa and its second largest city San Pedro Sula. Most people living in Ocomán work in agriculture, growing everything from sugar cane to sweet peppers. However, because the village is located close to the road, many villagers are able to walk each day to nearby towns for more secure, higher paying jobs.

Our church in Ocomán has been established for more than 20 years, but our work with this community began in 1998 when Hurricane Mitch hit Honduras. Torrential rain and heavy winds washed away the bridge overpassing the river between the village and Highway 5. That year, we were able to build a new bridge, reconnecting the village to the rest of the community. Since then, we’ve also installed an autonomous water pumping system that brings running water to most homes in the village.

Most of our ministries have a footprint in Ocomán, and because of it close proximity to our home base in Las Lajas, many of the leaders from Ocomán regularly help us serve other villages. Most teams who have traveled with us to Honduras over the years remember the village and have watched many of its children grow up year by year. God has moved in incredible ways in this tiny community, and we are so happy to have been a part of the growth that has taken place.
